Very little in life is more frustrating than committing to a healthy lifestyle and then seeing one of those recipe videos on social media of what looks like REALLY YUMMY food but there’s NO WAY it would fit with your current lifestyle. You watch the video. You can’t help it. It’s CALLING you. You’re literally compelled to watch it. And, when it’s over, you sigh and get just a little bit depressed, knowing that you can’t ever make that if you want to stay true to your goals.
…Or maybe that’s just me.
But sometimes you can clean it up, and you CAN have your “cake” and eat it too. (And sometimes I’m talking about actual cake, but in this case I’m talking about BBQ.) And sometimes you can’t. I mean, there’s just really no clean way to make a deep-fried Snickers bar. And that’s okay! There’s plenty of other awesome food treats out there for us!
And, as I hinted, one of those is BBQ Chicken Pizza Dippers. The original video presented itself on my newsfeed and the video did a great job of enticing me to make it. I NEEDED to make it! I had NO idea who to make it for, or for what event, but I knew I had to make this. It was too good, too easy, not to.

As shown in the Buzzfeed video, it does NOT fit within the 90/10 guidelines. First of all, and no offense to canned bread, but, it’s canned bread. Certain things should never come in a can, and bread is one of them. Check out the ingredients and see if you want any of it in your body. Chances are the answer is, “well, no, but it’s so easy.” (We will address that in a second.) Second of all, there was a great deal of BBQ sauce called for in the recipe. I have yet to find a commercially available BBQ sauce without processed sugar as an ingredient. Fine for some, but like I said, it doesn’t fit within the 90/10 guidelines, as processed sugar is found on the red tier.
So, really, in the entire recipe, those are the only two real assaults on 90/10: the canned dough and the bottled BBQ sauce. Everything else, the chicken, the parsley, the red onion, and the cheese, can easily be green tier! Even the bacon can be yellow tier if you buy the right kind (uncured, to be exact).
So, of those two red tier ingredients (canned dough and bottled BBQ sauce), how do we make a 90/10 swap that moves the ingredients up the tiers but still keeps an easy, doable recipe in tact?

So, without further adieu, here is the recipe for 90/10-APPROVED BBQ Chicken Pizza Dippers!
- 16 oz cheddar-jack cheese shredded
- 2 boneless, skinless chicken breast cooked and shredded
- 1/4 bunch fresh parsley finely chopped
- 1/4 red onion thinly sliced
- 6 slices uncured bacon cooked and cooled.
- 1/2 cup mozzarella shredded
90/10 Pizza Dough
- 1 batch pizza dough see notes
1 batch of Gracious Pantry BBQ sauce (see notes or blog for link)
- 1/2 batch Gracious Pantry BBQ sauce
- If you haven’t already, prepare your chicken. I boil the chicken, then shred it using my stand mixer. You can also cook it anyway you choose (boil, grill, microwave, sauté) and shred it with two forks. I personally find that boiling makes it easier to shred.
- Once it’s cooked and shredded, place it in a skillet with about 1/4 c. bbq sauce. Heat until hot. Set aside.
- If you haven’t already, prepare your bacon. Cook in a skillet over med heat until well-cooked. Cool on a paper-towel-lined plate. Crumble. Set aside.
- Preheat oven to 400 F.
- Make your dough. Divide dough in half. Reserve half for another use.
- Roll remaining dough out to a rectangle, approximately 11X15. (I personally like to line a jelly roll pan with parchment, then roll my dough out in that prepared pan.)
- Spread dough with about 1/4 c. bbq sauce.
- Working in layers, top the sauce with the prepared chicken, cheddar-jack cheese, onions, and parsley. Top with bacon. Top with mozzarella.
- Bake at 400 F for 10-12 minutes or until cheese is melted and beginning to brown.
- Remove from oven and allow to sit 5 minutes before slicing.
- Slice into sticks, and serve with additional BBQ sauce for dipping.
