Back before you were a parent, you pictured your life with kids. They were rosy cheeked, smiling, happy, cooperative and healthy kids. In your fantasy, the dinner table was where you laughed and shared stories about your day, hung spoons on your nose, played “Mr. Napkin-Head” just like Jude Law does in the movie The Holiday, and your little angels ate their wonderfully and beautifully prepared, and extremely nutritious meal, eagerly and happily.

And then, like the heartless brat it is, reality struck.

In real life, you dread the family dinner table, because the dinner table is where your children whine, complain, and stubbornly refuse to eat anything but macaroni and cheese and chicken nuggets, which are loaded with chemicals, highly processed, and lacking important nutrients. And you, because you are a good parent and you only want your children to eat so they can grow and thrive, cave in to their simple-yet-disheartening demands, and while you know they should be eating fruits and vegetables, you’re just happy they’re eating at all. Healthy kids seems like a pipe dream.

The family table, instead of being a place of peace, has become the danger zone, and every meal has become a war. And, too often it seems, that war yields surrender, and the spoils of that war are vital nutrients that the child misses. That leads to poor health, frequent illness, and, statistically, obesity.

But, there is hope! 1. My dinner table sadly IS a battlefield most of the time, but I have learned to modify some items so that they have no idea they it’s “healthy” 🙂 🙂
